Watch Joe Kennedy's Response to the State of the Union

U.S. President Donald Trump after a meeting during the World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland

Twitter lit up with jibes about the 37-year-old Democrat's response to President Donald Trump's State of the Union.

He indirectly referenced Trump as a "bully" during his response.

Rep. Joe Kennedy takes the stage to deliver the Democratic rebuttal to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address in Fall River, Massachusetts on January 30, 2018.

In a nod to "Dreamers", the 700,000 young immigrants brought here as children and now here illegally, Kennedy spoke in Spanish as he said Dreamers are a part of America's story and promised that Democrats will not walk away from them.

The response began by focusing on the American spirit, but quickly moved on to emphasizing the failures of the current administration and the fracturing of the country. "The real gap we face today is one of opportunity inequality", she said, invoking "neighbors who are struggling to find jobs" and "a child who drops out of college because she can't afford tuition". "Russia knee-deep in our democracy, an all-out war on environmental protection, a justice department rolling back civil right by the day". This is not who we are.

Amtrak engineer misread signal before fatal crash near Seattle, agency says
He said he heard the engineer mumble something, looked up and sensed the train had become "airborne", according to the NTSB. The conductor was hired by Amtrak as an assistant conductor in 2010 and was promoted to conductor the following year.

Under the leadership of Trump and congressional Republicans, Americans are "bombarded with one false choice after another", Kennedy said. "The coast or the heartland", Kennedy said, in addition to others. "Here is the answer Democrats offer tonight: we choose both". Because the greatest, strongest, richest nation in the world shouldn't leave any one behind. He added last evening, "We choose the thousands of American communities whose roads aren't paved with power and privilege, but with honest effort, good faith, and the resolve to build something better for their kids".

The response called out several recent social movements, including Black Lives Matter and #MeToo, declaring that the actions of everyday people, "more than any law or leader, debate or disagreement, that is what drives us towards progress".

Presumably speaking of Donald Trump, the MA representative assured Americans that while "bullies. may land a punch. they have never, not once in the history of our United States, managed to match the strength and spirit of a people united in defense of their future". While taking care to give respect to various groups that make up the Democratic political coalition, he emphasized that unity is the only way to effectively resist Trump. "We are going to fight for the diversity that makes our country great".

THAT is the measure of our character.
