High winds force more event postponements at Winter Olympics

Members of the course crew dismantle it after the women's slalom was canceled for the day due to weather at Yongpyong alpine center at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang South Korea Wednesday Feb. 14 2018

On Friday, the rearranged slalom is due to be staged as the men compete in the super-G.

If the winds die down, the gold medal is set to be decided at the Yongpyong Alpine Centre, with reigning champion Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States hotly tipped to prevail.

Shiffrin originally was supposed to get started with the giant slalom on Monday; that race was rescheduled for Thursday and will now be her first at these Winter Games.

"I'm feeling much better, much more like myself", she said on arrival in Pyeongchang, adding that after seeing a sports psychologist she has been able to re-focus.

After several delays in the schedule, the event was eventually called off as the hurricane-like winds made it impossible for the athletes, including the USA rising star Mikaela Shiffrin, to compete in such weather conditions, reports Efe.

"It was a long and hard day today", said the former Norwegian racer, twice a super-G world champion.

It's the third time in four days an alpine skiing race was shelved because gusts made it too unsafe for competition.

Wednesday's postponement means that Shiffrin could now potentially compete on back-to-back-to-back days should she elect to enter in the Super G on Saturday. I'll use this time to continue to train and refocus on Wednesday's slalom race.

"Plenty [of time left]". "She's so balanced, dynamic, intense and focused, so for me, I think she's got a chance in any event she skis in". No one has ever won all five at an Olympic games, man or woman.

While some skiers, like Mikaela Shriffin of the USA, will have to compete in back-to-back days because of the postponements, it seems like the safe call to keep athletes out of whiteout conditions as they fly down the mountain.

That's made her a heavy favorite Tuesday night, but she'll still face stiff competition on the mountain at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre. Because wind could again present problems, Waldner said, three of the downhill's four jumps were adjusted so skiers wouldn't fly as high in the air. They could reduce the length of the downhill by about 20 seconds and shorten the slalom by 10 gates. Already facing a bit of a time crunch because of all of the weather issues, organizers kept pushing back the first run of the two-run slalom until eventually deciding to call it off about an hour after the start time.
