HR McMaster may leave White House if Pentagon offers promotion amid tensions

The White House

Mr. McMaster's relationship with the president has reportedly been deteriorating for months, and last week Mr. Trump publicly called out comments made by his national security adviser. Still, Republicans familiar with the situation say he's "safe until he's not", and that they don't believe his position is particularly secure.

The most recent sign of conflict arose over the weekend, when Trump criticized the three-star general for saying the special counsel investigation shows "incontrovertible" evidence that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 presidential election.

There's talk of promoting the three-star general to a four-star position and sending McMaster back to the Pentagon, but then Mattis and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford have the issue of finding a suitable position for an outspoken leader who's become a political lightning rod in some civilian circles.

Meanwhile, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday said that Trump "still had confidence in General McMaster".

On Thursday, the Pentagon referred all questions about McMaster's future to the White House. "Any decision with regards to staff, the White House will make those determinations", said Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White.

In tweets sent in July, Trump announced his intentions to ban transgender people from serving in the military.

CNN previously reported that McMaster has been at odds with the President and other cabinet officials over the past year.

McMaster was quoted as saying at a security conference in Munich, Germany on February 17 that there is "incontrovertible" evidence that Russian Federation meddled in the United States election.

Still, McMaster could have a tough time back in uniform full time.

"The recommendations were a private conversation between the secretary and the White House, and the contents will remain private", Eastburn said.

Despite his public praise of McMaster, Trump has never liked him.

A Rand Corp. study commissioned by the Pentagon ahead of its 2016 policy change found that there were 1,320 to 6,630 transgender service members among 1.3 million people on active duty - less than 1 percent of the force.
