Iraqi court sentences 15 Turkish women to death for belonging to ISIL

Unfair ISIS Trial in Iraq Hands Women Harshest Sentences

The central criminal court issued the sentences "after it was proven they belong to the Daesh terrorist group and after they confessed to marrying Daesh elements or providing members of the group with logistical aid or helping them carry out terrorist attacks", said Judge Abdul-Sattar al-Birqdar, referring to the militant group using an Arabic acronym.

Several Western governments, including the United Kingdom, have expressed a wish for nationals who travelled to the Middle East to fight on behalf of the group be tried in Iraq. Many of them were women who came, or were brought, from other countries to join the war.

Another Turkish woman accused of joining the jihadist group was given a life sentence, the official said, adding they had all acknowledged the charges against them. "Four had young children with them", it adds.

Declaring the ones involved with ISIS in Iraq to be supporters to the terror outfit, Iraqi government spokesman Saad al-Hadithi said: "All foreign nationals who committed crimes and violations against the people of Iraq, whether directly or by supporting the terrorist IS militants, will be subject to the Iraqi law". One woman told the judge that she had actively taken part in the fighting.

At least 560 women and 600 children have been detained in Iraq on suspicion of being jihadists or IS fighters' relatives, AFP news agency reports.

Ford North America President Raj Nair Fired For 'Inappropriate Behavior'

A German woman was sentenced to death last month for belonging to the group and a Russian fighter was also sentenced to death in Iraq a year ago for joining the hardline group.

According to experts, an estimated 20,000 people are being held in jail in Iraq for alleged membership of IS.

Just last month, a German citizen was sentenced to death in Iraq for providing Daesh with logistics aid.

Iraq declared victory in December over Daesh, which had seized control of almost a third of the country in 2014.

Human-rights groups say harsh sentences have been handed down after unfair trials. "The Iraqi courts need to redirect their priorities".
