NRA boycott: FedEx to keep its discount; 10 companies drop gun group

NRA loses more than a dozen corporate partners

Major corporations like Delta and United Airlines, MetLife insurance, and vehicle rental companies like Enterprise, Avis Budget Group, and Hertz all have announced that they are ending their partnerships with the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Since then, many brands have announced they are ending special discounts for NRA members.

Researchers found that between 2007 and 2015, USA firearm injuries declined by 20 percent during NRA conventions, compared to the weeks before and after the meeting.

Many were responding to social media campaigns, but not every company buckled under the pressure.

NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre on Saturday labeled such decisions, involving at least 23 corporations, "a shameful display of political and civic cowardice".

Here's a roundup of who has taken action.

"The biggest reductions in injuries during convention dates were among men in states in the South and West that have the country's highest rates of gun ownership, and among individuals residing in the state hosting the convention, all of which support the notion that the reduction in injury rates is related to attendance at the conventions", said the report. She said news media loves the ratings it gets from putting crying mothers on the air. It has spurred renewed calls for stricter gun control. "These kids talk about enough is enough".

As November congressional elections draw closer, Trump and Republicans are under pressure to show they are responding to concerns about school safety without angering supporters who oppose gun control.

UPS said in response that it does not disclose the terms of its customer contracts.

If I had the chance to speak to those members of the NRA I would encourage them to boycott Delta and United. Those stores sell general merchandise, including outdoor and housing goods. - The software company that makes Norton Antivirus technology ended its discount program with the NRA.

While many major companies are backing away, there are still some retaining their NRA partnerships.

On Wednesday, FedEx said that UPS provides "discounted shipping rates to the NRA, which uses UPS for shipping".

Other companies that have severed relationships with the NRA include Metlife, Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, Best Western, and Wyndham.

SimpliSafe, which makes home security systems, "discontinued our existing relationship with the NRA", CEO Chad Laurans said in a statement. - The insurer terminated discounts that had been offered to NRA members on the NRA website.

Conservative commentators immediately called for their listeners to boycott companies or products cutting ties with the NRA, framing it as a repression of free speech.
