USA 'not surprised' by Russia's new nukes, boasts about own 'unmatched' arsenal

Putin States He Would Have Liked To Prevent The Collapse Of Soviet Union

Putin praised Russia's new hypersonic missiles and cutting-edge submarines during a state of the nation address that also touched on economic and social policy ahead of a presidential election this month he is widely expected to win.

A detailed, 37-page indictment from special counsel Robert Mueller alleges Russian operatives used fake social media accounts and targeted messaging to interfere in the 2016 election. He says he has "no idea" what they did or who guided them.

"Radicalism, whatever political or ideological nature it has, is in essence destructive, and we're obliged to protect the country and people's future from this threat", said Putin.

In 2002, the United States abrogated the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with Russian Federation, citing the need for a missile defense system that could prevent the United States from being blackmailed by a nuclear-armed rogue nation.

While U.S. missile defenses are unlikely ever to be enough to counter a Russian attack, the military and the defense industry have convinced Putin "that this threat does exist and you need to throw all efforts and resources on eliminating it", said Vladimir Frolov, a former Russian diplomat and lawmaker who's now a foreign policy analyst. "Many will push the president in this direction", he said.

The regional leader of the province of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, proposed calling the nuclear-powered cruise missile "Palmyra", after the historic heritage site in Syria that was taken back from the Islamic State group under the Russian air cover.

"We are not surprised by (Putin's) statement, and the American people should rest assured that we are fully prepared", Pentagon spokesperson Dana White said. Still, "it's not important if Putin was bluffing", said Golts. "One-hundred percent you do, and people who are well-educated, who must understand that we, Russia, can not prosecute anyone if they have not violated Russian law".

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump, who has been reluctant to confront Russia's meddling, has not publicly commented on whether his administration will pressure the Russian government to extradite the defendants.

When Kelly reminded Putin about Mueller's indictment, he said the request "has to go through official channels, not through the press or yelling and hollering in the United States Congress". For that reason, the Russians "generally look at cyberwarfare as a way to support informational goals, like shaping an election", Shakarian said.
