Summit could prove risky bet for both Trump and Kim

Cheers as North Korea rookies finish last in Paralympics debut

Maybe it's both. But after years of brinkmanship and missile tests, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appears to be signaling willingness to talk to the US about rolling back his nuclear weapons program, and halting missile and nuclear tests while negotiations are ongoing.

March 9: Trump accepts Kim's invitation to meet, which the White House says will take place by the end of May.

There is a danger that in rushing into a meeting with Kim, Trump could be manipulated for a photo opportunity with a leader whose real intentions are hard to discern. Tammy Duckworth, a Democrat from IL, said she welcomed Trump's "embrace of diplomacy" even as she offered a strong warning. "For the first time in many years, a serious effort is being made by all parties concerned", Trump tweeted Tuesday.

"While US policy toward North Korea has failed for decades, it is clear that a series of sanctions recently put in place by Congress and the administration are having a real impact", Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, R-Tennessee, said in a statement.

January 2: President-elect Donald Trump tweets, "North Korea just stated that it is in the final stages of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching parts of the U.S. It won't happen!"

But even if the US opens channels of communication with North Korean officials, it's not clear that anyone besides Kim himself is really empowered to represent the country.

"Those may have been his words, but that's not how I took it", said Swift, who was expected to retire in May.

The sudden news of the meeting between Kim and Trump came on Thursday night, as South Korean National Security Adviser Chung Eui-yong said that Kim extended an invitation to meet Trump, and the president agreed that the two would meet by May.

South Korea's national security director announced on Thursday that Trump had agreed to a proposal by Kim to meet by May to discuss the denuclearization of the peninsula. Stay in power, get the 20,000 American troops deployed in South Korea to leave the Korean peninsula, and ultimately bring South Korea under Pyongyang's rule. Instead, KCNA and Rodong praised North Korean envoys to the event for their diplomatic prowess.

Anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare meets the protesting SSC aspirants in Delhi
However, SSC aspirants alleged that the question paper has been leaked on social media and staged protests from February 27. Hazare urged the protestors to walk on the path of non-violence and demanded the government to take action in this regard.

"We're going to have to start talking to them".

Some top Republicans have yet to react to the news on North Korea.

Moon and Kim will sit down for a summit on the southern side of the Demilitarized Zone next month, Seoul said after its envoys returned from a historic trip to Pyongyang.

"I believe the Pyeongchang Olympics and Paralympics as well as our endeavors for peace will help create a new global peace", Moon said.

The European Union is welcoming U.S. President Donald Trump's readiness to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a "positive development". "In the meantime, all sanctions and maximum pressure must remain".

He added, "Kim Jong Un talked about denuclearization with the South Korean Representatives, not just a freeze". Ten months later, ballistic missile testing resumed, followed by another nuclear test.

July 28: A second Hwasong-14 is launched with an estimated range reaching into the US mainland, including cities such as Chicago.

Trump and Kim are under enormous pressure to deliver on the issue.
