Facebook is 'beast' used to stoke Rohingya violence, says UN Burma report

UN investigator blames Facebook for spreading hate against Rohingyas

Yeehang Lee's comments follow the release of images by the human rights group Amnesty International.

The report was based on information gathered from a series of missions to Bangladesh, Malaysia and Thailand, where teams of investigators conducted over 600 in-depth interviews with victims and witnesses of reported human rights violations and abuses.

In Rakhine state, Myanmar appeared to be pursuing a policy of forced starvation to make life there unsustainable for the Rohingya, Lee said. "It points at human rights violations of the most serious kind, in all likelihood amounting to crimes under worldwide law". Investigators also analyzed satellite imagery, photos and video footage.

"We are not denying rights violations but we are asking for strong, fact-based, and trustworthy evidence for the allegations they are making", Zaw Htay said.

More than 700,000 Rohingya people have poured across the border into Bangladesh refugee camps since last August following a military crackdown. "Others were hacked to death".

He also said Myanmar would no longer cooperate with Lee because she "has made biased, one-sided and unfair accusations against Myanmar".

Second, there must be accountability for the crimes that have been committed.

The refugees are fleeing a military operation in which security forces and Buddhist mobs have killed men, women and children, looted homes and torched Rohingya villages.

Valley in boil over army's killing of civilians
Following the incident, clashes between surging crowds and security forces erupted in a few Shopian areas, a report said. A police officer said an MVCP near Pahnoo had signaled a vehicle to stop, but it did not.

She said accountability for the abuses in Rakhine should be "the focus of the worldwide community's efforts to bring long-lasting peace, stability and democratization to Myanmar". "Importantly, it will be impossible for anyone to claim where they are from or describe where they had previously lived if the region's landscape has been so significantly altered".

Myanmar's envoy Htin Lynn rejected Lee's remarks and called for the council to fire her.

He said: "What I have heard and witnessed in Cox's Bazaar is a human tragedy with the fingerprints of the Myanmar government and of the global community".

United Nations human rights experts investigating a possible genocide in Rakhine state warned that Facebook's platform is being used by ultra-nationalist Buddhists to incite violence and hatred against the Rohingya and other ethnic minorities.

The United Nations (UN) on Tuesday warned that social media giant Facebook's platform is contributing to the spread of hate speech and ethnic violence in a crisis-hit Myanmar.

Chairman of the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar, Marzuki Darusman, told a press conference on Monday social media had played a "determining role" in events in Myanmar and that "as far as the Myanmar situation is concerned, social media is Facebook, and Facebook is social media".

"Neither the fact-finding mission nor Yanghee Lee are impartial", he said.
