Nigeria Ranks 5th In Africa, 91st Globally — UN Happiness Report

Finland has come out on top of an international index that ranks nations by how happy they are as places to live

In the latest edition of the UN's World Happiness Report, Finland tops 155 other countries when it comes to well-being, as measured by metrics like income, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom, trust and generosity. So, yes, we have the ideal circumstances to have a happy life here in Finland " said Sofia Holm, a 24-year-old resident of Helsinki, the Nordic country's capital, to the Associated Press. Burundi was listed as the least happy country. The east African nation is one of the poorest in the world, and has been plagued by ethnic violence and political turmoil for decades.

The study reveals the U.S. has slipped to 18th place, five places down on 2016.

This report also considers the happiness of immigrants. "The closeness of the two rankings shows that the happiness of immigrants depends predominantly on the quality of life where they now live, illustrating a general pattern of convergence", a report summary said.

He said the most remarkable finding was the consistency between locally born's happiness and that of immigrants.

Nigeria has been ranked the 91 happiest nation of the world, and fifth in Africa in the 2018 World Happiness Report. Denmark 4. Iceland 5.

Describing the reason for country's happiness, 24-year-old resident of Helsinki said that the basics are quite good in Finland and hence people are happy. Finland tops the list of happiest immigrants as well.

However, topping the happiness levels in the world have been Europe's Nordic nations.

Using data from Gallup World Poll Surveys from 2015 to 2017, Finland topped the World Happiness Report 2018 list, with Australia slipping from ninth to tenth place behind Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand and Sweden.

Taking the harsh, dark winters in their stride, Finns said access to nature, safety, childcare, good schools and free healthcare were among the best things about in their country. The report cited several factors to explain its falling ranking.

The 170-page report also reflected emerging health problems like obesity, depression, opioid crisis, especially in the United States who emerged as the leading nation with this health deformities. "All of the top 10 countries for overall happiness 2015-2017 are in the top 11 countries for immigrant happiness based on surveys covering 2005-2015". Though the economy is generally strong and per capita income is high, it ranks poorly on social measures: Life expectancy has declined, suicide rates have risen, the opioid crisis has worsened, inequality has grown and confidence in government has fallen.
