South Africa's former president Jacob Zuma to be charged with corruption

FILE NDPP Shaun Abrahams

"After consideration of the matter, I am of the view that there are reasonable prospects to successfully prosecute Mr Zuma on charges listed in the indictment served on Mr Zuma prior to the determination of the matter by Mpshe, SC".

South Africa's top prosecutor on Friday reinstated decade-old corruption charges against former President Jacob Zuma, escalating the retired leader's legal troubles just weeks after he stepped down.

He was a willing instrument in Zuma's hands while the latter was president, to conduct witch hunts and help him escape prosecution.

Thales' local affiliate will face charges of corruption and fraud, while Zuma will face charges of corruption, fraud, money laundering and racketeering. "We don't want to be prosecuting people in the media", said Mfaku.

Zuma - then deputy president - was linked to the deal through Schabir Shaikh, his former financial adviser who was jailed for corruption.

In a separate case, South African authorities are seeking to arrest members of the Gupta business family, which allegedly used its connections to Zuma to influence Cabinet appointments and win state contracts.

Gareth Southgate set for crunch talks with government over Russian Federation boycott
A more likely inclusion is Jack Wilshere, after Arsene Wenger hinted that he had some sort of inside information. "You never want any player to experience injury and of course Tottenham have some very big matches coming up".

The same year, South Africa's highest court ruled that Mr Zuma had violated the constitution when he failed to repay government money spent on his private home.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA), which has been pursuing Zuma since he assumed office in 2009 demanding that corruption charges against the former president be reinstated, has described the NPA's decision as historic.

Zuma will face 16 charges relating to 783 instances of alleged wrongdoing.

This court battle wound down in October 2017, when the Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed Zuma's and the NPA's appeal.

"This is a very historic day". More than 200 witnesses have already indicated their willingness to testify.

Political opponents campaigned tirelessly for him to face trial. Nor had it found evidence that officials were bribed in an attempt to influence the deal. Only a year ago did a court rule that the decision to drop charges based on these shadowy tapes was irrational. He was also freed on parole after serving five months of a four-year sentence.
