Trump's personal lawyer calls for Mueller investigation to be shut down

FBI's Andrew McCabe fired less than 48 hours before retirement day

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, who has endured a year of withering attacks from President Donald Trump, was sacked by the Justice Department on Friday just days before he was to retire.

McCabe has said he believed his firing was because he corroborated former FBI Director James Comey's claim that Trump tried to pressure him into killing a probe into Russian interference in the 2016 US election.

USA media report that McCabe is opposing his dismissal, saying he is being targeted because he corroborated former FBI director James Comey's claims that Trump tried to obstruct the Russian Federation investigation.

The attorney general said the reports concluded that McCabe made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor - including under oath - on multiple occasions.

President Trump has blasted McCabe in the past, particularly over his wife's acceptance of campaign cash from an ally of Hillary Clinton's, before McCabe began FBI's investigation of Clinton's email server. McCabe said he honestly answered questions about whom he had spoken to and when, and that when he thought his answers were misunderstood, he contacted investigators to correct them.

Preet Bharara, the former United States attorney for the Southern District of NY, in a pair of tweets took aim at both Sessions for succumbing to pressure to fire McCabe and at Trump weighing in.

His dismissal, just days before he was set to retire, puts his full pension and benefits package in jeopardy and is seen as an inglorious end to a career of nearly 22 years with the bureau.

Mr McCabe denies it.

Indian Wells: Federer dispatches Krajinovic to advance to fourth round
Chardy has played eight sets already this tournament and has been very shaky with his second serve recently. He was uncharacteristically sloppy - as in 40 unforced errors sloppy.

McCabe did not start overseeing the investigations until after his wife's campaign ended, the FBI has said, and therefore did not have a conflict of interest. Trump arguably terminated Comey more out of fear of how he was conducting the Russian Federation investigation; he appears to have gone after McCabe due to a vendetta and possibly to send a signal to others in law enforcement who might run afoul of him.

McCabe began working at the FBI's NY field office in 1996, was promoted to a supervisor position at the FBI's headquarters in 2006, and held various jobs at the bureau until 2016, when he was named deputy director.

During his testimony on Capitol Hill last June, Comey acknowledged orchestrating the leak of his memos to the media a few days after he was sacked in hopes that the Justice Department would appoint a special counsel. Even by the standards set by Donald Trump's presidency, it was a uniquely belligerent decision, and upon careful observation, it appears McCabe's firing might bring more bad news for the president than good. His removal could add to the turmoil that has enveloped the FBI since Comey's firing and as the FBI continues its Trump campaign investigation that the White House has dismissed as a hoax.

Bromwich, who himself is a former Justice Department inspector general, suggested in his statement that office treated McCabe unfairly, cleaving off from a larger investigation its findings on McCabe and not giving McCabe an adequate chance to respond to the allegations he faced. We have yet to see what's in the inspector general's report, and it's quite possible that it will undercut McCabe's credibility and prove his firing was warranted. In a last-ditch effort Thursday to avoid the firing, McCabe and his lawyer met officials at the Justice Department for several hours.

As well as the perception that McCabe was simply trying to "run out the clock..."

The firing could add to discontent inside the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where both Comey and McCabe are widely respected.

Comey, who has been largely silent on his firing save for a day of Congressional testimony, is on the brink of embarking on a tour for his new book, which promises to reveal new, unflattering details about the Trump administration.

"They clearly concluded that McCabe misled them - and that he misled them on one of the core issues they were investigating".
