Toyota Suspends US Driverless-Car Tests After Fatal Uber Accident

Self-Driving Uber Car Crashes In Arizona — Kills Pedestrian

But the fatal accident on Sunday in Arizona, involving a self-driving vehicle operated by ride-sharing giant Uber, has raised concerns that the driverless auto industry may be moving too fast.

There were an estimated 40,000 traffic fatalities on US roads a year ago, according to the National Safety Council, and more than 90% of them were caused by human error.

Self-driving cars were once the fixtures of futuristic cartoons and sci-fi films.

In hard conditions, such as limited visibility or on bad roads, an experienced human driver may have an edge over self-driving cars using today's technology, said Bart Selman, professor of computer science at Cornell University. In Arizona, the state recently stopped requiring that autonomous cars be accompanied by a human driver, though the vehicle involved in this week's crash did have a human driver inside.

The vehicle was traveling at about 40 miles per hour when the incident happened in Tempe, Arizona.

"Human drivers aren't that safe", said Lionel Robert, a professor at the Robots Institute at the University of MI. "It has yet to put cars on the road with no one inside them", said Kerr. But he expects that self-driving cars will eventually be much safer.

"When it comes to autonomous driving, safety is our absolute priority".

Driverless cars "see" the world around them using data from cameras as well as radar and lidar sensors that bounce laser light off objects to assess shape and location.

Rajkumar said numerous companies he works with require human safety drivers to take the wheel when pedestrians are present along the roadway.

NCAA Tournament is sweet for Big 12, four teams still dancing
Nevada beats No. 2 Cincinnati. "But in reality, kids are playing basketball all over the country and teams are getting better". But there's no denying the fact that Knox can put up points, as he did in scoring 25 points in Kentucky's win over Davidson.

Self-driving cars are actually better than humans at obeying traffic laws. "So on football weekends, when there's a bunch of drunk college kids, I drive at a lower speed". They don't fall asleep and drift into oncoming traffic.

"The driver said it was like a flash, the person walked out in front of them", Moir told the Chronicle.

Selman and Robert both say that Sunday's accident, as tragic as it was, will help improve self-driving safety.

"You can make all the predictions you want, but you learn from actual experience", said Robert.

Here's what you need to know.

Self-driving cars are very good at detecting and avoiding obstacles, Selman said.

A woman crossing a street was killed by an Uber self-driving sport utility vehicle in Arizona, police said on Monday, leading the ride services company to suspend its autonomous vehicle program across the United States and Canada.

Safety regulators later determined Tesla was not at fault in that accident.

According to Paris-based consultant Denis Bicheron, one of the ideas being floated is the introduction of a recording device that registers who was driving at the time of the accident - a human being or a computer. "We need to make sure these systems are working correctly".
