Easy lifestyle changes could prevent 3500 cancer cases

Lifestyle choices are behind four in 10 cancers

Margaret Carr from CRUK said: "These research findings are startling in that, for the first time, we can see how many cases of cancer could be prevented by things like not smoking and keeping a healthy weight".

A British study found that 40% of cancer cases in the United Kingdom could be prevented if people changed their lifestyle.

However, it has also raised the risk of developing the killer disease from being overweight and obese - with 572 new cancer cases attributed to this. The leading causes of preventable cancer in the United Kingdom are smoking, excess weight and over-exposure to ultra-violet radiation. "Prevention is the most cost-effective way of beating cancer", Kumar said.

According to a Cancer Research UK report, over 2,500 cancer diagnoses can be prevented every week if people just smoked less or quit other bad habits.

It highlights the well-known dangers of smoking, with nearly half of all cases of cancer each year put down to tobacco.

Research has revealed that nearly 2500 cases a week can be prevented if British people make simple changes in their lifestyle.

The CRUK research team hopes authorities would help curb cancer rates through tobacco and junk food taxes, advertising bans, and boring packaging for cigarettes.

Philippines: 19 dead, at least 21 injured after bus plunges into ravine
He cites police casualties - at least 91 dead and 227 wounded - as proof of the danger law enforcers face. The impact killed the driver and most passengers in the front rows of seats, he said.

Public Health England recently published a rule of thumb guideline to combat the obesity crisis.

"In the fight against obesity, laws to restrict the tempting junk food deals that are at the heart of Scotland's poor diet will be crucial".

In a pilot scheme launched in London and the West Midlands a year ago, the charity posted advertisements on billboards stating "obesity causes cancer".

"Obesity is potentially the new smoking", Harpal Kumar, chief executive of Cancer Research UK said. These figures show that we each can take positive steps to help reduce our individual risk of the disease.

Cancer Research UK says obesity is particularly linked to breast and womb cancers.

"We have already reached a record low in the numbers of teenagers smoking, and halved the number of children being exposed to second hand smoke".
