Winter Storm Warning, Watch issued for parts of area starting tonight

A winter storm warning is in effect from

The winter storm advisory in Boston - downgraded from a winter storm warning on late Wednesday night - was dropped in the city overnight, remaining in effect for southeastern MA through 8 a.m. Thursday.

On Monday, New York's Westchester County Board of Legislators held a special meeting on the massive power outages caused by the previous storms, grilling representatives of Con Ed and NYSEG, CBS New York reports. These areas could see anywhere from 8-12" + of snow with localized pockets of 16-24"+ above 2,500 ft.

Areas between the Ohio Valley and central Pennsylvania had already received between 6 and 13 inches of snow as the storm system made its way into the Northeast. On New York's Long Island, Newsday reported that a woman was killed and five people were injured when a van overturned on a parkway. During that time, drivers must not park in snow emergency routes, marked by red and white signs.

Metro-North Railroad operated a reduced schedule and warned that it could be forced to cancel trains later in the day.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said 5,500 utility workers and 300 National Guard members were standing by.

The storm is an odd occurrence in March - regionwide storms of this size typically develop only about once a year, the New York Times quoted National Weather Service director Louis Uccellini as saying.

In Philadelphia, where wind-whipped snow fell on Tuesday, restaurant server Katy Halbeisen called the early-spring storm "pretty lame".

As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, Virginia State Police reported on social media that troopers had responded to 250 crashes statewide.

In Washington, D.C., federal offices were closed on Wednesday, and on Thursday, the government is opening on a two-hour delay.

The storm also stranded local air travelers.

Although airports worked to de-ice planes and plow runways during the storm, airlines reduced the number of flights during the storm, according to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. The snow is expected to taper off in the evening, and be finished before midnight. Roads locally should remain passable into the evening hours thanks to warm ground temperatures, with conditions most likely to deteriorate after sunset tonight.

The forecast remains active with another storm in the forecast by the weekend ahead.

As of Wednesday morning, about 3,500 flights had been canceled nationally.
