TPS Superintendent responds to teacher pay raise package

Teachers are planning to rally at the state Capitol on Monday in support of increased pay and more funding for classroom resources, and the state's largest teachers union says a prolonged strike is still a possibility.

According to National Education Association estimates for 2016, Oklahoma ranked 48th, followed by MS at 49 and South Dakota at 50, in terms of average US classroom teacher salary. That strike resulted in West Virginia lawmakers approving a 5 percent raise for public school teachers and state employees.

The Oklahoma Education Association, the state's largest teachers' union that represents almost 40,000 members and school personnel, called the passage of the bill "a truly historic moment", but one that remains "incomplete", according to its president, Alicia Priest. In 2017, about a quarter of teachers left the state or gave up the profession altogether.

Arizona Educators United, a coalition of educators, demands a 20% salary increase for teachers, competitive pay for all education support professionals, as well as education funding restored to 2008 levels.

The Oklahoma strike comes weeks after a statewide strike by teachers in West Virginia, which lasted 9 days and ended in a deal granting 5% pay raises to teachers and other state workers.

Teachers in Oklahoma applauded the state Senate's passage of a $447 million bill to fund educators' first raise in a decade by raising taxes on oil and gas production as well as cigarettes and fuel-but warned that the plan is not enough to keep them from striking.

The same whistleblower said that he "believes" CA was retained by the Indian National Congress, a charge the Congress has denied. Nix will now appear before a United Kingdom parliamentary committee, which is likely to take place on 17 April.

"This bill represents a tremendous step forward for public education in Oklahoma", State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister said in a press release.

Oklahoma City Public Schools have already canceled classes Monday in anticipation of the walkout. "It's not enough", Priest said.

"Teachers will be here on April 2", said Oklahoma Education Association President Alicia Priest.

Since 2008, the Oklahoma has cut funding by more than $1,050 per student and leads the nation in reductions to education spending, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

"This package does not overcome the shortfall that has caused four-day weeks, overcrowded classrooms that deprive kids of the one-on-one attention they need", Priest said in the Facebook video.

The school district will close so teachers can go to the state Capitol to advocate for education. "Our ask is still our ask". "This bill allows us to begin to reverse Oklahoma's severe teacher shortage and begin attracting new talent to the profession while also rewarding career educators".
