China reassures public over debris from falling space station

This computer graphic shows objects in low Earth orbit that are currently being tracked

Calmer space weather around earth and its atmosphere is now expected in the coming days, which means that the density of the upper atmosphere, through which Tiangong-1 is moving, did not increase as predicted.

Experts believe the space station will become space debris on April 1; they are thinking sometime around 4:30 a.m.

The Chinese space agency's latest estimate puts re-entry between today and Wednesday.

It is expected to land somewhere between 43 degrees north and 43 degrees south latitudes, which includes many populated areas, including the US, China, the Middle East, Africa and Australia, but rules out re-entry over the United Kingdom and much of Europe. Canada, northern Europe and Russian Federation are safely out of range.

The 43rd parallel passes through southern Wisconsin, including Madison and Milwaukee.

You're better off buying a lottery ticket. But some pieces likely will survive. "But luckily, most of the earth is made up of water and it is likely that the Tiangong-1 will end up in a safe unpopulated zone like the Pacific", Zarb Adami said.

Biggest convoy yet leaves rebel pocket of Syria's Ghouta, state media says
Jaish al-Islam would lay down its heavy weapons in exchange for government-provided water and electricity returning to the town. More than 4,500 people, including over 1,400 fighters, left Harasta for Idlib over the course of Thursday and Friday.

NBC News explains only one person named Lottie Williams of Tulsa, Oklahoma, is known to be hit by space debris falling to Earth.

This is just like Skylab back in 1979, where pieces came crashing down in Perth Australia. "It will move across the sky in a much more stately manner". No one on the ground was injured. Want to watch the satellite plunge to earth in real time? Debris from the 6-ton satellite ended up falling into the Pacific Ocean, causing no damage.

Although the incident has been embarrassing for China's space program, it hasn't delayed its progress.

The Tiangong-1, or "Heavenly Palace", has been floating uncontrolled since the Chinese space agency lost its control in 2016, five years after its launch.

The 8.5-ton and 10m Tiangong-1 space laboratory, which means "Heavenly Palace", was launched on September 30, 2011. Since then, the station has been slowly orbiting closer and closer to Earth.

It was created to be a manned lab, has two modules, including sleeping space for two astronauts, according to the Aerospace Corporation. A third astronaut slept in the Shenzhou spaceships that docked with the station, which also contained facilities for personal hygiene and food preparation. "By comparison, the risk of being hit by lightning is 1 in 1.4 million, and the risk that someone in the USA will be killed in a hurricane is about 1 in six million", the aerospace authority said in a public advisory. It plans to send a manned mission to the moon in the future. WBAY contributed to this article.
