So what do Palestinians say?
INSKEEP: Let's recall a little geography.
Fatalities from the March 30 violence on the Israel-Gaza border identified by Israel as members of terror groups.
"The large crowds reflect the Palestinian people's determination to achieve the right of return and break the siege, and no force can stop this right", Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said.
ESTRIN: Well, there were big rallies organized along the border.
The protests are in support of Palestinian refugees returning to lands they fled or were expelled from during the 1948 war surrounding Israel's creation. "Suddenly, random and intense shooting broke out and people began to fall in front of me, including a friend", Helo said. People played soccer. There were food trucks.
Israel's defense minister on Sunday rejected worldwide calls for an investigation into deadly violence along Gaza's border with Israel, saying troops acted appropriately and fired only at Palestinian protesters who posed a threat.
The protests will culminate in a mass demonstration on May 15th, the day after Israel's 70th Independence Day and the scheduled opening of the new United States embassy. And those protests are still going on in much smaller numbers.
The death toll for Friday rose to 18, after a 29-year-old man died Monday of his injuries. His hand was covered in a bandage from a rubber bullet wound. He denied soldiers acted unlawfully, but said some mistakes might have been made and would be investigated.
"I don't regret it", he said, as his mother beside him buried her head in her hands with a resigned smile.
Padres' Joey Lucchesi to make first Major League Baseball start Friday against Brewers
The Padres shouldn't be an underdog at home to start the season; the Brewers shouldn't be a favorite on the road. He has also had career-long success against the Padres, going 6-2 with a 3.07 ERA in 14 games and 10 starts.
HAMADA ZAZA: (Foreign language spoken).
"Therefore, we don't want the march to lose its image", Husam said. He said there's no work. The protests were held at six different points.
"An army can use reasonable force to defend a border", said Omar Shakir of the global group Human Rights Watch.
Israel said it had directed fire at "suspicious figures near the border fence", though he was killed more than a kilometer away from it.
On Sunday, one person was seriously wounded by gunfire, Palestinian medical officials said. There's also a dispute about the deaths. Israel and Hamas have fought three cross-border wars. But there were others killed, as well.
However, the military's open-fire policies came under more scrutiny as two amateur videos emerged purportedly showing two Palestinians being shot-one killed and one wounded-while not posing any apparent threat to soldiers.
Israel has defended its soldiers' actions, when they opened fire Friday on Palestinians who strayed from a main protest camp and approached the heavily fortified fence cutting off the blockaded enclave.
ESTRIN: Yes. I mean, when I was at the border, I saw someone carrying a slingshot. The military said that in one incident, two armed men opened fire near the fence. (Hamas, an Islamist terror group that avowedly seeks to destroy Israel, had earlier acknowledged five of them were its members.) Islamic Jihad later claimed an 11th.
Preparations by both sides for further violence continued in earnest throughout the week, as the IDF called in more reinforcements and redeployed troops to deal with expected trouble spots, while Hamas reportedly planned to expand the riots, both in scope and the number of participants, for this coming Friday.
Numerous young victims remained defiant to Israel's warnings as they vowed to return to the scene of protests, as soon as they recovered from the wounds.
