Prescription Database Could Help Prevent Opioid Abuse, But State System Still Lags

Legal marijuana linked to reduction in opioid prescriptions

"These findings suggest that medical and adult-use marijuana laws have the potential to reduce opioid prescribing for Medicaid enrollees, a segment of population with disproportionately high risk for chronic pain, opioid use disorder, and opioid overdose".

They found that the rates of opioid prescribing in states that had legalized medical marijuana dropped by 5.9 percent annually, on average. But one study found that opioids dispensed through Medicare's prescription drug plan decreased significantly if people had access to medical pot dispensaries or were allowed to grow marijuana for their own use. Beside the toll in lives and health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates prescription opioid abuse is an $78.5 billion drain on the US economy each year.

The studies are the latest in a long line of research showing that marijuana availability is associated with reductions in opiate use and misuse.

At this point, 30 states and the District of Columbia have laws legalizing some form of marijuana use, including eight states that have legalized recreational use. The second conclusion shows that the primary driver of the opioid crisis is not prescription drug use, but rather use from substances purchased on the black market. That's about 39 fewer prescriptions per 1,000 people using Medicaid.

To investigate this theory, the investigators turned to recent data from the federal insurance programs Medicare and Medicaid.

Grant Hill to be inducted into Basketball Hall of Fame, report
The marquee members of the 2018 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame class have been released, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN . The full class of inductees will be officially announced Saturday in San Antonio in conjunction with the Final Four.

Researchers found that Medicare patients in states with marijuana dispensaries filled prescriptions for about 14 percent fewer daily doses of opioids than those in other states.

Results did vary based on the type of opioid, however. While some deaths may be due to illegal narcotics like heroin, others are caused by opioid medications like oxycodone, fentanyl, hydrocodone, morphine, and methadone.

"And now, with these two papers, plus a handful of previous studies, we've got pretty compelling evidence that shows that we need to really to think about cannabis as a potential way to curb the opioid crisis", said Hill, who co-authored an editorial that was published alongside the two studies in the same journal.

Legalisation of marijuana may play a role in fighting the ongoing United States opioid crisis. "But if a patient has tried to treat pain using multiple modalities without success, a trial of medical cannabis may make sense". Marijuana may be an alternative to consider for some of these patients, experts say; the cannabinoids in the drug bind to the body's cannabinoid receptors, which are part of an internal pain-relieving system. Instead, it should be a back-up option for patients who are struggling to manage pain and who could be in danger of addiction.
