Prince Philip in hospital for hip surgery

Prince Philip

Queen Elizabeth IIs husband Prince Philip, was today admitted to a London hospital for a planned hip surgery, Buckingham Palace said.

The surgery will take place tomorrow at the King Edward VII Hospital in Marylebone.

The palace said the prince entered the King Edward VII Hospital in the afternoon and would have the surgery on Wednesday (Thursday NZT).

In 2013, the royal household said Philip had once again been admitted to the hospital for exploratory surgery after his doctors revealed that it was necessary following "abdominal investigations".

Philip has missed several public events in recent weeks, including an Easter Sunday church service in Windsor.

Details of the duke's condition, or which joint is causing the issue, have not been released by Buckingham Palace but the late Queen Mother underwent two successful hip operations in the 1990s, first when aged 95 then later when she was 97.

Philip is understood to have had trouble with the hip for about a month and will now be operated on to resolve the problem.

Philip has sharply reduced the number of charity events he attends since announcing his retirement, but still accompanies the queen on occasion.

The Duke retired from 65 years of public service in August last year.

Philip's last hospitalization was in June 2017 when Buckingham Palace was forced to announce he had been hospitalized because he was going to miss the State opening of Parliament he attended annually with Queen Elizabeth.

The royal couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in November past year.
