Turkey Expects Vladimir Putin

Putin attends groundbreaking ceremony for Turkey's first nuclear power plant

Yuri Ushakov, Russia's presidential aide, told national media on Monday that Moscow will exert every effort for completing the delivery of air defence systems S-400 to Turkey by 2020. Both the defense system agreement and Putin's visit underscore the intensifying ties between Turkey and Russian Federation.

Erdogan indicated that Turkey was in no mood to listen to criticism from the West over the purchase of the S-400 systems, saying "this issue is now closed".

Turkish companies have been put off by the size of the financing required as well as by concerns they will not receive a sufficient share of the lucrative construction side of the deal, two industry sources have said.

Turkey launched Operation Olive Branch against Afrin on January 20 in a move to clear its border region of Kurdish militia, known as the People's Protection Units (YPG), which is seen by Ankara as a terror group.

"We are realising a number of strategic projects with the Russian Federation", said Erdogan. "With every failed provocation, our relationship strengthened, just like steel after iron is quenched with water".

"The scale of this project is hard to exaggerate", Putin said at the ceremony.

"We have chose to speed up the delivery of those highly efficient systems", he added.

A few minutes after the arrival of Russian president, Vladimir Putin, in Ankara, along with his Turkish homologue Recep Tayyip Erdogan, they set the foundations of Turkey's first nuclear power station in Akkuyu, through a teleconference from Ankara.

Every day you're going home and you're just feeling like, I failed. "This is about funding our schools for our students". But the plan must still survive votes in the Republican-controlled Senate and House of Representatives later in the day.

The TurkStream project is a direct pipeline from Russian Federation to Turkey with 15.75 billion cubic meters of gas capacity set aside for Turkey's use while a second line with the same 15.75 billion cubic meter capacity is planned for Europe's needs. The first stage is due to come online in 2023, the 100th anniversary of modern Turkey's founding, and be completed entirely in 2026.

The Russian leader was driven to the vast presidential palace surrounded by an escort of Turkish troops in ceremonial dress on horseback and was warmly greeted by Erdogan who was waiting in person at the gate.

Putin and Erdogan will also launch the construction of Turkey's first nuclear power plant. The project is estimated to cost 20 billion United States dollars. Mr Putin and Mr Erdogan have met several times in the past year and regularly speak on the phone.

Speaking at a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, Putin said relations between the two countries are developing "step by step".

The three leaders will discuss regional events, the ongoing war in Syria, and the relations between their countries.

Their cooperation comes despite having positions on opposing sides in the Syrian conflict.

The Astana meetings have been internationally criticised for not including representatives from the West nor Syrian opposition groups, leading to solutions skewed towards pro-Assad Iran and Russian Federation.
