US To Sanction Russian Oligarchs Over 2016 Election Meddling

US To Sanction Russian Oligarchs With Ties To Putin

CNN notes the new development "reveals that Mueller's team has intensified its focus into the potential flow of money from Russian Federation into the USA election as part of its wide-ranging investigation into whether the Trump team colluded with Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election".

A judge on Wednesday voiced serious doubts about former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort's lawsuit against special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

The Trump administration used CAATSA last month to slap sanctions against two-dozen Russian individuals and entities for their involvement in a two-year campaign of cyberattacks against the U.S.

A senior administration official told Fox News the sanctions would be announced by the end of this week.

Russian Federation may be forcing the oligarchs to return to Russian Federation and return any stolen wealth as well.

Four sources said the sanctions would be imposed under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, also known as CAATSA, which was passed by Republicans and Democrats seeking to punish Russian Federation for its 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, involvement in the Syrian civil war and meddling in the 2016 United States presidential election.

This week's actions will include sanctions against Russian oligarchs, including some with ties to Putin as well as to the Russian government, according to two U.S. officials briefed on the deliberations.

He said Russian Federation had never possessed or produced novichok, the nerve agent used in the attack, and claimed Moscow's offer of consular support to Ms Skripal had been denied.

"The administration is committed to implementing the CAATSA law as we have said many times", a senior USA official told the outlet.

Plans call for targeting six to 10 so-called Russian oligarchs, though no firm decision has been made on the number, the official said.

Another oligarch was stopped during a recent visit to the United States, but there were no details if he was searcher, the report said citing a person briefed on the event.
