Apple Cofounder Is Quitting Facebook Amid Privacy Concerns

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak says he's left Facebook amid personal security concerns as fallout from massive Cambridge Analytica data breach continues

By Nichollas Harrison [GFDL or CC BY-SA 3.0], via Wikimedia CommonsApple co-founder Steve Wozniak said that he would delete his Facebook account in the wake of recent data security scandals.

For tech-savvy users, the Cambridge Analytica scandal simply encapsulates what privacy activists have been warning about for years. Facebook acknowledged that up to up to 87 million users may have had their data improperly shared.

In an email interview with USA Today, Wozniak wrote that he was no longer satisfied with Facebook, knowing that it makes money off of user data. He says "Apple makes money off of good products, not off of you".

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak says he isn't sure Facebook can fix its privacy issues and he expects it will be decades before it changes its policies. Facebook's COO Sheryl Sandberg also said previously that the users of the social media giant should pay for their privacy if they didn't want their personal information used for targeted advertising.

This content is published through a licensing agreement with Acquire Media using its NewsEdge technology. The CEO also called for new data-privacy legislation, saying that while his preference is for industries to self-regulate, "I think we're beyond that here". It was only a few weeks ago that Elon Musk quit Facebook, and he did it with a bang.

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg, who is due to appear before a congressional panel on April 11, has characterized Cook's criticism as "extremely glib".

In turn, he added, "Facebook makes a lot of advertising money off this".

Steve Wozniak has left Facebook, according to a report. While it's possible to leave Facebook without retiring from Messenger, there's always the risk that Facebook will keep on collecting data on its users.

Cambridge Analytica was accused of illegally accessing Facebook users data in violation of Facebook terms of service after the data was allegedly misused for the election campaign of US President Donald Trump in 2016.

The Apple cofounder did not immediately respond to Ars' request for comment.
