Outcast Reed wins the Masters at Augusta

Reed stays on course

It was his worst round at Augusta National this week, but as the patrons were fixated on Jordan Spieth climbing up the leader board, Patrick Reed gained momentum on the back nine to hold on and win the Masters, his first major title, on Sunday.

"We have seen some glimpses of the old Tiger coming back and he is playing some good golf".

"It's impossible to put this feeling into words", Reed said about his win.

Reed was greeted by his wife Justine and her family after donning the green jacket, but some commentary focused on the absence of the golfer's own parents and sister. He would bogey the 72nd hole to drop to 13-under and finished 3rd.

That's a polite way of saying what Spieth - who won the Masters in 2015 and finished second in 2014 and 2016 - could take. "I wanted to shoot a low round and see what happens, if something insane happens".

"What we did on 12 today was really cool". "I gave it my all and made (Reed) earn it".

Next up was another Texan, Robbie Fowler, who birdied the last to post a 14 under total after a five under 67, but Reed stayed resilient the whole way through and a two-putt par at the last for a one under 71 was enough to clinch a one-stroke triumph on 15 under par.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy believes he can win a Masters title and complete his career Grand Slam, despite missing out again on Sunday. As the scoreboard showed Jordan Spieth drawing level with Reed on -14 while on the back nine, the galleries erupted.

"I was pretty gutted at the finish", said Spieth, whose drive on the 18th hole clipped a branch and left him 325 yards to the hole, dooming his hopes of a birdie and a course record.

CWG: Weightlifter Gururaja wins silver to open India's medal tally
It was the only truck that his father owned and the accident took away the only source of income for the family in 2010. Chanu smashed the CWG record with every lift and even broke her personal record and remained in a league of her own.

Spieth, a former Masters champion, began the day nine shots behind and turned in one of the greatest final rounds in Masters history.

"I know where these Sunday pins are", he told CBS-TV after the round, "and fortunately played the golf course exactly how it needed to be played".

The Texan nearly followed it with an eagle at the par-five 13th after a superb iron to 12 feet from the pine straw but his putt stayed right and he tapped in for birdie.

After failing to break 70 in his 12 previous rounds at Augusta National, he caught fire with three rounds in the 60s to build a three-shot lead after 54 holes.

McIlroy, meanwhile, had his chance at the second, where he failed to hole an eagle opportunity - and he must have missed eight putts from 10 feet on Sunday.

Despite being ranked behind his three closest competitors as 24th in the world, Reed managed to enter the top of the leaderboard in the second round of the tournament on Friday with a tally of 66. Webb Simpson, the 2012 US Open victor, made back-to-back eagles at the seventh and par-5 eighth.

The Masters marked Woods's sixth tournament in 2018.

"I don't think it's really as much a popularity thing with the fans as it is that Rory has been in this position before to win here", added Reed. "All in all it was a bittersweet ending".

Spieth is the only player to finish in the top five at the Masters in four of his first five appearances.
