Kaizer coach quits after Cup loss sparks crowd violence

Kaizer Chiefs players run for cover at Moses Mabhida Stadium

Hundreds of Amakhosi fans invaded the pitch immediately after the final whistle of their Nedbank Cup loss to Free State Stars where players, officials and security guards were attacked.

Supporters set plastic chairs alight, damaged advertising boards and even assaulted a security guard, who is in a serious condition.

As the supporters beat the guard, a woman can be heard shouting: "They are going to kill".

A total of 18 men suffered injuries during the pitch invasion, most of the men being treated by medics at the stadium and five men were taken to hospital where they were treated following the invasion, Mazibuko said in a statement.

Speaking outside court, Jojisa's sister Nomaswazi said it was unfair that her brother was the only one arrested.

Once the rioting fans had been brought under control, Kaizer Chiefs head coach Steve Komphela announced his immediate resignation from his post, and suggested the violence, rather than the result, was behind his decision.

South African Police Services spokeswoman Nqobile Gwala on Sunday confirmed the arrests and said the two people were facing charges of public violence and malicious damage to property.

The incident has drawn condemnation from South African Minister of Sports and Recreation, Tokozile Xasa and political parties.

The Moses Mabhida Stadium was built at a cost of £400million for the 2010 World Cup and stood as one of the main showpieces, hosting seven games including the semi-final between Germany and Spain.

"Hooliganism and thuggery of this nature has no place in football and acts of violence. can not be tolerated", South Africa's Premier Soccer League said.

The (PSL) said it would work closely with law enforcement to ensure that those responsible are subjected to the judicial process.
