Deputies Hand Sheriff Scott Israel a Landslide 'No Confidence' Vote

Broward Sheriff Scott Israel bso

The Broward County Sheriff's Deputies Association overwhelmingly voted that they have no confidence in Sheriff Scott Israel. The union revealed the results of a vote, which indicated 534 out of 628 who voted said they had no confidence in the sheriff.

"Members have displayed great courage to come out and vote under threat of retaliation and reprisal from the sheriff", Bell said.

While the vote is largely symbolic, it could have real consequences - Florida Governor Rick Scott has the power to remove the sheriff from his office, and he could take this vote into consideration when making that decision. Union representative Jeff Bell instigated the confidence/no confidence vote as a result of numerous problems his officer face. "I will not be distracted from my duties by this inconsequential IUPA union vote, which was created to extort a 6.5 percent pay raise from this agency". "I will not be distracted from my duties by this inconsequential IUPA union vote". Those who purportedly voted in this straw ballot reflect only a small number of the 5,400 BSO employees. On April 23 the Federation of Public Employees, which represents 2,500 Broward Sheriff's employees - not deputies - issued a letter of support to the sheriff.

About a week after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Israel confronted a spokesperson for the National Rifle Association during a heated town hall on CNN, calling her out for claiming to support the victims but not advocating for "less weapons".

Israel, who has been both defensive and critical of how his department and deputies responded to handled the shooting, slammed the union, rebuffed the "inconsequential" vote, and belittled its significance.

Korea talks may break deadlock but increase pressure on United States president
Kim and Moon then saluted an honour guard and military band, and Moon introduced Kim to South Korean government officials. Ultimately, the two countries agreed to reduce their over-supply of medium-range and long-range nuclear missiles.

Bell said Scott's failure to remove Israel would mean he "agrees the sheriff is an wonderful leader".

Israel said in a statement that he was accountable only to the citizens of the county. Only the state senate has the power to remove him.

Israel said the no-confidence vote was "unfortunate and appalling". Bell said the turnout was higher than expected even though "union members felt intimidated to vote".

Afterward, he talked about the no-confidence vote. What's changed since then? Currently, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating Broward Sheriff's Office actions relating to shooter Nikolas Cruz's slaughter of 14 students and three teachers on February 14. Really only one thing: "I denied them a 6.5 percent raise". "This has never been about a contract, this has been about his longstanding bad policies, his failure of leadership", said Bell.

Bell vehemently rejected Israel's defense, saying that the deputies' frustrations had been building for years, but the handling of the Parkland shooting was the tipping point. Bell relays that many deputies were upset with Israel for publicly referring to Peterson's actions as "cowardly", something his deputies are now hearing the public hurl at them.
