WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum to quit amid reported privacy disputes with Facebook

Prince Felipe of Spain Meets Whatsapp Founder Jan Koum And His Wife

The CEO of messaging unit WhatsApp confirmed in a Facebook post Monday that he's leaving the company. Diego Dzodan, a Facebook executive, was arrested by the Brazilian federal police after Facebook failed to turn over information from WhatsApp messaging accounts, following a judges request on a drug trafficking case.

"It's been nearly a decade since Brian (Acton) and I started WhatsApp, and it's been an awesome journey with some of the best people", Koum said in the post.

Facebook has declined SiliconValley.com's request for comment at this time. The inner circle of management - and the Board of Directors - have been fiercely loyal during the scandals that have rocked the social media giant.

He has so far sold over $7 billion in Facebook stock.

Executives posting their resignations on Facebook. His decision to leave the company came prior to Facebook's data privacy misstep with political firm Cambridge Analytica, according to internal sources. "But it is time for me to move on", Koum wrote on his Facebook profile. The app charged a fee of 99 cents per year.

- In August, the company introduced voice messaging, where a user can record and send short audio clips.

The Facebook acquisition turned Koum and Acton into billionaires.

Coli outbreak expands; still no source identified
Because the growing season in the Yuma region is at its end, the farm is not growing any lettuce at this time. A nation-wide outbreak of E.coli that is linked to romaine lettuce has landed in Georgia.

But even in the early days, there were signs of a mismatch. In a WhatsApp blog post from 2012 they wrote: "no one wakes up excited to see more advertising; no one goes to sleep thinking about the ads they'll see tomorrow". Also around the same time, there were rumours of Facebook CSO Alex Stamos leaving the company due to disagreement over similar issues. Whether WhatsApp would earn revenue in future was left an open-ended question. You've probably never heard of him, but his app made it easier for you to communicate with all your friends and relatives.

That same month WhatsApp also suspended such data sharing activity in the UK. Facebook pushed WhatsApp to change its terms of service to give the social network access to the phone numbers of WhatsApp users, along with analytics such as what devices and operating systems people were using. These would then be used for targeting advertising or data mining.

WhatsApp application for smartphones that allows users of different mobile platforms to exchange messages. In 2016 it started sharing some user data, although this led to an European Union fine.

So with all that in mind here's a summary of how WhatsApp actually makes money, and why Koum may have been concerned about the future of the app.

Despite the recent controversies surrounding the firm's use of customer data, elements within Facebook management are reportedly unhappy with WhatsApp's use of encryption technology for all messages, meaning that content can not be analysed for targeting purposes. Moreover, WhatsApp also opposed the plan of putting advertisements into the app. For now, WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted but WhatsApp Payments isn't.

Koum said he would take some time off to do things he enjoys outside of technology, such as collecting rare air-cooled Porsches.

Brian Acton, co-founder of WhatsApp (L) and Jan Koum, co-founder and CEO of WhatsApp, speak at the WSJD Live conference in Laguna Beach, California October 25, 2016.
