United Kingdom to continue probe despite Cambridge Analytica shutting shop

New Review for Third-Party Apps on Facebook

Cambridge Analytica announced Tuesday that it would cease operations and declare bankruptcy in the United States and United Kingdom after losing customers because of the revelation.

In 2016, Prince was also the second-largest donor to Make America Number 1 - a super PAC founded by the Mercer family (of the Donald Trump-supporting billionaire Robert Mercer, who funneled $10 million to Cambridge Analytica), ran by the former Trump campaign CEO and White House chief strategist Steve Bannon along with Kellyanne Conway.

Cambridge Analytica always denied wrongdoing and Mr Trump's campaign has said it did not use its data.

"Over the past several months, Cambridge Analytica has been the subject of numerous unfounded accusations and, despite the company's efforts to correct the record, has been vilified for activities that are not only legal, but also widely accepted as a standard component of online advertising in both the political and commercial arenas", the company's statement said.

A separate investigation by the House of Commons committee on digital, culture, media and sport into fake news will also continue to examine issues relating to Cambridge Analytica. "I'm leading a national investigation with my colleagues to ensure Pennsylvanians and Americans are protected from these kinds of unauthorized information sharing", Shapiro said.

Facebook halted its review of all outside apps after it was revealed that users' data had been mishandled by a third-party app and shared with the research firm Cambridge Analytica. Facebook and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself have been under rigorous investigation themselves, facing questions from U.S. senators.

WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum to quit amid reported privacy disputes with Facebook
Koum said he would take some time off to do things he enjoys outside of technology, such as collecting rare air-cooled Porsches. You've probably never heard of him, but his app made it easier for you to communicate with all your friends and relatives.

The Cambridge Analytica sign had been removed from the reception area of its London offices on Wednesday.

Facebook's policies allowed third parities including Cambridge Analytica to access the personal information of users who engaged with certain applications without consent.

"Social media users don't expect to have their information given to third party developers without their knowledge", Attorney General Josh Shapiro said in a statement Thursday.

The company was able to amass the database quickly with the help of an app that appeared to be a personality test.

After the announcement, Britain's data regulator said it would continue civil and criminal investigations of the firm and will pursue "individuals and directors as appropriate" despite the shutdown.

The data his firm used was reportedly gathered in early 2014 through an app called "thisisyourdigitallife", which was built by a Russian-American researcher at Cambridge University called Aleksandr Kogan.
