Manafort's lawyer punches big hole in Mueller investigation

Robert Mueller Paul Manafort blank subpoenas

Manafort's lawyers argued Friday for the dismissal of the Virginia indictment, saying that the charges should be tossed out because they do not relate specifically to the Russian Federation investigation and the question of whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow to tilt the 2016 presidential race in Trump's favor.

The Judge has not yet ruled on Manafort's motion to dismiss the charges against him, the report added.

Prosecutors countered in their own filing that an investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government "would naturally cover ties that a former Trump campaign manager had to Russian-associated political operatives, Russian-backed politicians, and Russian oligarchs".

During Friday's hearing, U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis accused Mueller's team of lying about the scope of the Russian Federation investigation.

During a morning hearing, U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III at times lost his temper as he repeatedly pressed a lawyer from Mueller's team on whether the indictment against Manafort was intended exclusively as leverage against President TrumpDonald John TrumpStormy Daniels lawyer: There were "extensive communications" on settling hush-money deal before election Trump asks Pentagon to look at options for withdrawing troops from South Korea: report Adelson helped arrange canceled Pruitt trip to Israel: report MORE, according to CNN.

Judge T.S. Ellis III said said Mueller should not have "unfettered power" in his Russian Federation probe.

"You don't really care about Mr. Manafort's bank fraud", U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III told Mueller's prosecutors during the hearing.

Earlier this week, Manafort revealed in a court filing that the special prosecutor's office has said they have no evidence of any recording or intercepted phone call between him and Russian officials.

"But he's out there fighting on fake news CNN - I think NBC may be more distorted and worse but - no, but on cnn they have a headline 'Judge in Manafort Case Says Mueller's Aim Is to Hurt Trump'". 'We are not separate from the Justice Department'. "It's unlikely you're going to persuade me the special counsel has unlimited powers to do anything her or she wants".

Assassinated Hamas engineer was arms dealer
The allegations on Israeli spy agency Mossad of killing a Hamas engineer Fadi al-Batsh has now nearly confirmed. A string of Israeli officials have neither confirmed nor denied whether Israel had a hand in the killing.

Prosecutors said Friday that their investigative powers were outlined both in Rosenstein's letter appointing Mueller in May and in the August memo.

He asked Dreeben whether the special counsel had already blown through its $10 million budget; Dreeben declined to answer.

Kevin Downing, a defense attorney for Mr. Manafort, filed the brief April 30 in the special counsel's money-laundering case against his client.

He then said Judge Ellis "is really something special, I hear from many standpoints".

Asha Rangappa, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent, characterized Ellis' remarks about prosecutors aiming to get Manafort to flip as "bizarre commentary".

Ellis withheld ruling on dismissal of the indictment.

Manafort is facing charges in Virginia and Washington. The tax charges against Manafort had to be brought in Virginia, though, for jurisdictional reasons.

Ellis appeared receptive, at least in part, to the argument.
