Twitter in password warning

Twitter advises all users to change passwords after glitch that exposed some in plain text

The shocking announcement came via a company blog post released yesterday by Twitter's CTO, Parag Agrawal.

Popular social networking website Twitter has advised to its 330 million users to change their passwords as a precaution because they had been unintentionally "unmasked" inside the company by a software bug. The company made a total of $61 million in the first three months of this year, thanks in part to the strong growth in advertising revenue and decent gain in users.

The micro-blogging site shared details of the breach on their handle and also sent messages to their users encouraging them to change their passwords. The blogpost reads, "When you set a password for your Twitter account, we use technology that masks it so no one at the company can see it. This is an industry standard", Agrawal said. The bug allowed passwords to be kept in an "internal log" without hashing so they were stored in their readable text format. As a solution, the developers have "removed the passwords and are implementing plans to prevent this bug from happening again". We have fixed the bug, and our investigation shows no indication of misuse or breach by anyone.

Since the best passwords should be hard to remember, consider using a password manager like 1Password or Lastpass.

Were Analysts Bullish Mitie Group plc (LON:MTO) This Week?
With GBX 145 highest and GBX 110 lowest target, St Ives PLC has GBX 140 average target or 62.79% above the current (GBX 86) price. Credit Suisse maintained it with "Outperform" rating and GBX 1900 target in Tuesday, January 16 report.

All three experts urged users to act on Twitter's advice and change their password.

The thought is that your original password isn't ever presumed to be saved on Twitter's servers - but that's what happened in this case, the company stated.

Although there is no indication that Twitter's systems have been compromised, caution should always be exercised in situations like these. It should be pointed out that reusing passwords across different services is not recommended for user safety. For this reason, it is vital that you update all your accounts with the same password.
