Trump Administration Ends Protected Status for almost 90000 Hondurans Living in US

Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen M. Nielsen announced the end of the Temporary Protected Status for Hondurans on Friday

More than 50,000 people will be "condemned to misery", according to one immigrant rights advocate, following the Trump administration's decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Hondurans who arrived in the USA after fleeing their hurricane-ravaged country in 1999.

DHS said in a statement that conditions "that resulted from the hurricane have notably improved" and the disruption caused by the hurricane had "decreased to a degree that it should no longer be regarded as substantial".

Those affected by the decision have been protected from deportation by what's known as temporary protected status, which allows immigrants to stay in the US after their countries are hit by an environmental disaster, epidemic, ongoing armed conflict or other extraordinary conditions. "Last year, just over $4.4bn was sent to Honduras - a 12.7% rise on 2016 - contributing 18% of GDP, according to the central bank".

Around 437,000 immigrants from 10 countries affected by extreme violence or disasters have temporary protected status.

The Trump administration has ended temporary immigration protection for more than 400,000 migrants in the a year ago.

"The hurricane that struck Honduras in 1998 is not the reason why its citizens still enjoy TPS protection in 2018", said RJ Hauman, government relations director at the Federation for American Immigration Reform. The think tank estimates $159.3 million would be lost in state GDP annually without these workers, according to data published by the organization in October 2017.

Honduras has one of the world's highest murder rates outside of a war zone.

Per the Curtin University release, Number 16 outlived the previous record holder, a captive tarantula in Mexico, by some 13 years. Main launched a longterm population study of trapdoor spiders in the central wheatbelt region of Western Australia in 1973.

"They're willing to cut back these protections from deportation to end people's work authorizations and then say somewhere down the road we'll find some congressional solutions", Bussey said. They now have until January 5, 2020, to sort out their affairs before returning home - or try to normalize their migratory status in other ways, such as through marriage or sponsorship.

After El Salvador, Hondurans are the second largest nationality with TPS to lose their status, which was granted to the country in 1999 following the devastation of Hurricane Mitch. Mitch was the deadliest hurricane in the Western Hemisphere in more than 200 years.

"The hurricane was a generation ago, and Honduras long ago reverted to its regular messed-up state, not the special post-hurricane messed-up state required by the TPS statute", said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies.

The Honduran government "deeply" lamented TPS termination.

Overall the country is worse off than it was almost two decades ago post-hurricane, said Michael Allison, a political scientist specializing in Central America at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania.

Critics have accused the administration of pre-deciding to end the status regardless of the unsafe conditions that persist in the home countries and in some cases over the objections of those countries' governments.

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke delayed a TPS decision on Hondurans in November after she reportedly felt pressure by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly to end the protections.
