Merkel, allies avert collision for now in German migrant row

GETTY•BUNDESTAGAngela Merkel could be replace as German Chancellor as soon as next week claims Kai Whittaker

German Chancellor Angela Merkel accepted a two-week deadline to win agreement on tougher migration policy, a concession to her Bavarian coalition partner that eases an immediate standoff without removing the threat of further government tension down the road.

Italy and France have also become involved in the migrant debate, with Italy's interior minister Matteo Salvini, who is the deputy Prime Minister of the country, refusing to accept new refugee boats and calling for asylum seekers to be equally distributed across the European Union, rather than being hosted by the first country they land in. Germany's interior minister and a senior leader of the Bavarian CSU party is Horst Seehofer.

Seehofer's CSU party is due to meet Monday to decide which course to take.

Speaking at a joint news conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, following their talks at the Meseberg castle near Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said they discussed various new initiatives to reform and strengthen the EU.

Seehofer was quoted Sunday telling the Bild am Sonntag newspaper: "No one in the CSU has an interest in bringing down the chancellor. or blowing up the coalition".

It seems to have dawned on Seehofer that if Germany sends back refugees who are registered elsewhere, a country such as Italy with its new anti-immigrant government might stop registering them, as it did at the height of the refugee crisis in 2015. The Bavarian party wants to tighten rules governing the entry into Germany of migrants who are first registered in another European Union country and those rejected for asylum.

Merkel last week said she needed two weeks to come up with bilateral migrant deals with partners, such as Italy and Greece, similar to one agreed between Turkey and the European Union in 2016.

Macron past year outlined his vision for a stronger, more united Europe as a forceful reply to what was known as the National Front, a far-right party he defeated at the polls.

"We want to support Italy's desire for solidarity, and also hope that Germany receives understanding when it comes to European solidarity on the question of migration", she said in Berlin.

British PM promises Brexit health service boost
This is unsustainable and we call on the Prime Minister to specifically address this in the detail of her plans, ' she said. But she has been roundly castigated for continuing to say that money would partly come from a " Brexit dividend ".

In a tweet on Monday, Trump said that the people of Germany were turning against their leadership because of loose migration policies.

The Bavarians have threatened to defy Merkel and on Monday go ahead with plans which she has sought to block.

Merkel is under strong pressure from her conservative allies to take a harder line on migration.

The spat over immigration has laid bare the deep tensions in a fractious German government that took office only in March, after almost six months of postelection haggling, and exposed the limits of Merkel's authority.

The CSU, which faces a regional election in Bavaria in October, has recently sharpened its criticism of Chancellor Merkel's open-door policy for refugees.

Most first arrived in Bavaria, which borders Austria.

Since then, a million asylum seekers have been admitted to Germany.

Finally, they said victims of crime are twice as likely to report incidents if they are committed by people who are different from them, distorting the statistics.
