Airport reopens after 12hr closure due to volcano eruption

Passengers in Perth arrive at the airport to find their flights are cancelled

"Volcanic ash around the island of Bali following the eruption of Mt Agung means it is now not safe to operate flights to and from Denpasar Airport", a Qantas statement said.

The airlines will continue to assess conditions on Friday and customers have been urged to check websites.

Mount Agung is about 45 miles (70km) northeast of Bali's tourist hotspot of Kuta, last had a major eruption in 1963, killing about 1,100 people.

Passengers wait at the airport as flights are cancelled following the volcanic eruption of Mount Agung.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) also rescheduled its flights between Singapore and Denpasar.

Bali's main global gateway will be closed until at least Friday evening, according to officials, who added that two other domestic airports were also shut.

The return flight NZ246 from Denpasar to Auckland has also been cancelled.

Mount Agung is spewing ash 2000 metres into the air.

Train from Alberta derails, spills oil in Iowa
Metropolitan Utilities District, which provides the Omaha metro area's drinking water, said it was monitoring the spill. Williams said oil will be removed from the containment site with equipment to separate the oil from the water.

Volcanic ash is hard and abrasive, and can damage propellers and turbo compressor blades, as well as scratching cockpit windows. She writes news features and covers the education round.

It was a timely reminder that insurance should be bought at the time of booking.

Twelve Jetstar flights, including routes between Denpasar and Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide and Cairns, were cancelled.

The volcano began gushing smoke on Thursday.

Indonesian authorities shut Bali's global airport for a second time in seven months as a fresh eruption Thursday at Mount Agung near the popular tourist island sent volcanic ashes several miles high into the sky.

It had a dramatic increase in activity last year, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people, but had quietened by early this year.

Indonesia is home to around 130 volcanoes due to its position in the highly active ring of fire - a belt of tectonic plate boundaries in the Pacific Ocean which is vulnerable to frequent seismic activity.
