Trump takes no stand on Crimea

US special counsel Robert Mueller is leading the investigation of possible Russian interference in the 2016 US

US President Donald Trump refused on Friday to rule out accepting Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region when he meets his Kremlin counterpart Vladimir Putin next month.

Trump and Putin will discuss "the current state and prospects of further development of Russian-US relations and also vital issues of the worldwide agenda", the Kremlin press service said.

On June 15, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, commenting on media reports alleging that US President Donald Trump said Crimea was Russian at the G7 summit, that the Crimean issue was closed for Russia.

When asked what Trump wants from the upcoming meeting with Putin, Bolton said "the president has very much in mind, he wants to understand the Russian position and perhaps more importantly he wants Vladimir Putin to understand our positions".

Asked if the USA might recognize Crimea to be part of Russian Federation, he said, "We're to have to see" and then said the situation was handled "unfortunately" by his predecessor, President Barack Obama. "Spain, France, it's unfair what they've done to the United States". However, Putin and Trump talked on the sidelines of the forum and adopted a joint statement on Syria.

Russia had earlier denied meddling in the USA election campaign and Trump called special counsel Robert Mueller's probe on the Russian interference a "political witch hunt". "We'll see what Russian Federation does", Trump said. "Let them discuss these issues and see exactly where there might be room for progress or where we find there is no room at all".

Croatia top group after last minute winner against Iceland
But Iceland got one back on a penalty kick in the 76th minute, as Croatia conceded for the first time in Russian Federation 2018. The Iceland defender Sverrir Ingason almost scored twice just moments later, heading just over and then again off the crossbar.

"We'll be talking about peace".

But Trump has long supported warmer relations with Russian Federation, and Western diplomats based in Washington have begun to fear that he could make major concessions in Helsinki. "When they say they didn't meddle, they're lying".

Just a few weeks ago, Trump met North Korea's dictator, Kim Jong Un, at a historic summit in Singapore. "We might even be talking about some of the things President Obama lost, like Crimea, that could come up". It will continue to support rebels in eastern Ukraine, as well as President Bashar Assad and Iranian troops in Syria.

Accepting that Crimea is never to return to Ukrainian control would be a major concession to Russian Federation, which is languishing under tough global trade sanctions over its actions.

The July 16 US-Russia summit in Helsinki could reset a relationship dogged by decades of risky rivalry.
